The
label
Flor de Rafael Gonzalez,
as it is called by it’s full
name, originated in the 1830‘s,
and gained fame by the
introduction of the
Lonsdale
format, which was
developed
in honor of the 5th Duke of
Lonsdale, Hugh Cecil Lowther
(pictured at left), a famous
English cigar lover of this
time. After this brand
disappeared from the market for
some time, it was revived by
El
Rey del Mundo. On the cover of
each
Rafael Gonzales box is an inscription which declares that
the cigars should be smoked
within a month after dispatch
from Havana, otherwise they must
be carefully stored in a
humidor
for one year to mature. This
statement refers to the “sick
period”, which not only is
experienced by wine, but cigars
as well. This pertains to an
interval within which a fresh
product often exhibits
undesirable flavors due a
ripening process.
Rafael
Gonzalez cuban cigars are appreciated
especially for their
consistently high quality.
These cigars offer the typical,
customary
Habano flavors with
their pronounced
honey-sweetness, however display
little spiciness. Especially
recommendable are the
Lonsdale, the
Coronas extra and the
Petit Coronas. The
Panetelas
Extras is a true bargain.
