Avo
Uvezian was born in 1926, the
son of a family of musicians
from Beirut. His father was a
composer and symphony orchester
conductor, his mother a gifted
singer. The dream of the
talented young pianist was to
become a great musician, and the
talent and commitment, which has
accompanied him until today, had
soon granted him an early
success. Touring with his Jazz
Trio “Libanon Boys” throughout
the Near and Middle East, he
received high accolades. Through
the contacts he made on tour, Avo landed in the USA in1947.
There, in New York City, Avo studied classical piano and
music composition at the famous
Julliard School of Music. During
his studies, he played in
different bands with great
success. The Korean War
interrupted his career, when
until 1953 he served in the US
Army in its music corps.
Afterwards he continued to play
with the great jazz musicians in
the 50’s and 60’s, fulfilling
his dream of becoming a musician.
At the
beginning of the 1980’s, the
multi-talented businessman and
jazz musician traveled to Puerto
Rico and opened up a restaurant
and a piano bar. There Avo discovered his love of
cigars,
and it became his great passion.
Ever a perfectionist, he soon
had his own privately rolled
brand which he gave away to his
guests, and who then quickly
began demand his cigars. The
way from connoisseur to cigar
composer was not far.
Around
1982, Uvezian became acquainted
with the master cigar producer
Henrik Kelner in the
Dominican Republic, and by 1988
the first AVO Uvezian cigars had been
sold in New York. Two passionate
aficionados had found each other
and the synthesis could only
result in “cigars in perfect
harmony”. Beginning with 100,000
cigars in the first year,
Hendrik Kelner and
Avo Uvezian
reached 750,000 in the third.
Today three million cigars
bearing the name of the jazz
pianist are enjoyed every year
by aficionados throughout the
world.
